Static vs dynamic QR — what's the difference?

A static QR code encodes the URL directly into the pattern. There is no server in between — when someone scans it, their phone reads the URL and opens it. No fees, no expiry, no tracking. This is what this generator produces.

A dynamic QR encodes a short URL that redirects through the QR provider's server, which logs the scan and lets you change the destination later. That requires an ongoing service — which is why dynamic QR companies charge a subscription.

For most uses (business cards, posters, packaging, fridge magnets) a static QR is what you want. For campaigns where you need to track scans or change the destination, you want dynamic — but you can fake it with any URL shortener that has analytics.

Frequently asked questions

Do these QR codes expire?

No. They are static. They will keep working as long as the destination URL is online.

Can I track scans?

Not with a static QR — that is the trade-off for not having recurring fees. If you need tracking, generate a short link with a service like bit.ly first, then turn the short link into a QR.

Should I include "https://" in the URL?

Yes. Without the protocol, many phone cameras treat the QR as plain text instead of opening it as a link.
